All human beings desire to be happy, but for some reason that is not an easy task. In a world of technological and material advancement, one would think that we have found more ways to be happy; but it seems that now, more than ever, people are finding more reasons to be unhappy. Habib Umar bin Hafiz, a Muslim scholar and master of the spiritual sciences within Islam, will discuss these causes of unhappiness and the ways one can find a deeper sense of happiness and purpose in nearness to God.
Habib Umar bin Hafiz is the Founder and Director of Dar Al Mustafa, a seminary in Tarim, Yemen, and leads the Ba'Alawi spiritual and social movement with its roots in Yemen's Hadhramaut valley. He is a signatory of 'A Common Word Between Us and You', a document that builds bridges between Muslims and Christians. He recently spoke at Cambridge University on the need to continue such dialogues. In July 2008, Habib Umar partnered with Muslim Aid Australia as founder of the Yemen-based Al Rafah Charitable Society to address issues of poverty and hunger and lack of sufficient health care in rural Yemen, particularly the Hadhramaut region. In December he convened a meeting of scholars from Yemen and the region to address the rise of theological extremism, calling on influential scholars to return to and promote theological moderation which characterizes the Yemeni tradition.
